Artist Profile - Murray Ayson

Murray's work is inspired primarily by the light and shade of the New Zealand landscape. His love of the outdoors and the rugged natural beauty of the South Island countryside has drawn him to many untouched areas of Fiordland, the Catlins coast in southern Otago, and Central Otago.    Born and educated in Otago, Murray also spent many years on the land farming near the Catlins, before moving closer to Dunedin.   Now painting fulltime, Murray punctuates this with trips around New Zealand and abroad to gather further resource material and inspiration for new art works.

"My artwork is uniquely me" says Murray.   "Being a self-taught artist, I paint what I see and feel.   Nature is the best teacher.   It's taught me to develop stronger powers of observation and look deeper into what I see.   Consequently, I paint with detail and always it is of areas that I've travelled in and explored.   My camera aids in capturing the ever-changing light and assists me when I return to my studio".   Murray says "As long as the landscape is out there, and I am able,  the future continues to hold great inspiration for me to paint.   My artwork gives you and others the opportunity to also enjoy these wonderful places you may not otherwise see".

Murray’s style reflects the mood of the bush, lakes and mountains, and his paintings present a perspective on a landscape that is simultaneously familiar and unexpected, serene and powerful.    Because of his attention to detail, Murray develops his oil paintings from the photographs he takes on his trips into the back country of the South Island and elsewhere that he travels.   Recently he has been exploring by helicopter, discovering and capturing New Zealand landscapes inaccessible by road.
