A Bird's Eye View - 1st Nov 2013

A heavy overnight fall of snow in Fiordland did not change my plans next day to travel from Te Anau over the mountains into George Sound.   The morning dawned crisp and clear and as the sun came up, the waters of Lake Te Anau were calm and still, full of glistening reflections of snow-covered bush.   Some magical hours followed with a bird's eye view from the helicopter as it took me across the Murchison Mountains to George Sound and returning via the Kepler mountain range to Lake Manapouri and Te Anau.

As we hovered over streams and tarns with overhanging native bush dusted in snow I captured images on my camera from which to paint.   What an inspiration!   The bush surrounding Lake Alice and all the rivers that find their way to the ocean via George Sound had very little snow on the western side of the mountains.   This provided me with even more variety of scenery to inspire my brushes into action on canvas at the easel.   Check my website shortly for some of my memories of this fantastic trip, captured on canvas.
